The photos above show an invertible portal in the open, and closed positions. The portal should be left in its open position during the nesting season, and otherwise closed to prevent squirrels from taking over the nest box.

This technique can be used for boxes that are mounted low enough to be easily reached.

Insure that the box is empty of inhabitants before preventing access.
