Despite some success in limiting the damage caused by woodpeckers to nest boxes, a second problem exists--woodpeckers sometimes use the box to store acorns. They insert acorns unconcerned that there isn't an easy way to remove them.
In cases where a nest box is repeatedly being used to store acorns, I (re)move the box thinking that the woodpecker's activity will dissuade other species from using the box.
