White-breasted Nuthatch markings

I sometimes find markings such as those shown in the photo. These markings are made on the top and/or front of the nest box. Since a White-breasted Nuthatch subsequently begins a nest in the box, I surmise that it had made the markings, and that the markings may indicate that the box has been claimed. |
