What is Janna

Janna is an application program that quickly allows a user to produce a textual list of bird species in taxonomic order. The graphic below shows the creation of a list containing four species, which is then copied to the clipboard, and could be pasted into another application's window (e.g. e-mail client). The list can consist of either or both the common name and four character alpha code.

The program is distributed with three species lists:

  1. IBP North America

This list originates from The Institute for Bird Population. Specifically, the list was extracted their file titled English and Scientific Alpha Codes for North American Birds - Tab-delimited text file, sorted in phylogenetic order (TXT).

This list contains over 2100 species.

  2. California

This list of California bird species originates with Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The list is a comprehensive listing of all the bird species seen naturally in the U.S. state of California as determined by the California Birds Records Committee (CBRC).

This list contains over 600 species.

  3. Santa Clara County, CA by Bill Bousman

The source of the Santa Clara County, CA list is South Bay Birders Unlimited.

    This list contains 392 species.

Note: All of the above lists were morphed to fill Janna's needs.

Program Customization

One can add species lists or customize any of the provided species lists to suit their region of interest. The caveat is that a species cannot be selected unless it is present in currently selected species list. Therefore, you may need to add a species to a species list, and, if so, it should be added with proper spelling (no abbreviations), capitalization, punctuation, and order (taxonomic). New species lists can be added as needed provided their contents conform to the format described within the distributed species lists.

Janna also provides you the ability to save and restore your selections as projects. For example, you may have a list of backyard birds, a list of birds that you've seen this year, etc. Each list can now be saved and restored as a separate project.

Program Licensing

The Janna program is distributed as freeware (meaning that there is no cost to license it). The program is provided “AS IS” and without warranty, express or implied. In no event will the author be held liable for any damages arising from the use of the program.

Program Requirements

The program runs on IBM compatible computers under the Windows operating systems excluding 64-bit Windows 7. However, the program can be installed and run on Windows 7 64-bit if done in Windows XP Mode.

Program Installation

The latest version of Janna is 1.11.0 dated June 27, 2010. To install it, download the installation program and run it.

The program requires that Microsoft's® Visual Basic 6 Runtime Library be installed. If the program does not run, and reports that a file named "msvbvm60.dll" is missing, you need to obtain and run the program vbrun60sp6.exe.

Support

Since the Janna program is distributed as Freeware, support is limited. route11 will attempt to resolve valid questions and problems with the program. route11 will not provide end-user education on basic installation and operation.
